A couple of tips to help get you started with my Quinoa Recipes:

  • Quinoa can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. I typically cook three cups of quinoa at the beginning of the week and store it for recipes later. (Three cups of dry quinoa will make nine cups of cooked quinoa.) Be careful when you are looking at the recipes to determine if it calls for cooked quinoa or just quinoa.
  • If you need to know a basic recipe for getting started with cooking quinoa, I recommend this post: How to Cook Quinoa Perfectly
  • Unless you have purchased packaged quinoa that specifically states that it has been pre-rinsed you need to rinse quinoa thoroughly prior to cooking. The exterior of the seeds are covered in a bitter substance called saponin. Not only will it ruin the taste of the dish but it can cause gastrointestinal distress in some people. Its so soapy that the Incas used to rinse quinoa and save the water to bathe in! Rinsing quinoa is easy, but you will need a very fine metal strainer like this one or the seeds will fall through. Simply put the quinoa in the strainer and run it under a warm stream of water for three or four minutes.
  • Some people like to soak quinoa prior to rinsing. If you decide to soak your quinoa, just be aware that it will decrease the cooking time. If you soak it for long the quinoa will be a bit softer – try it for yourself and see if you like it!
  • A lot of people ask if you can cook quinoa in a rice cooker. Yes! Here is where I posted on how: How to Cook Quinoa in a Rice Cooker
  • While red quinoa and white quinoa can be used interchangeably, red quinoa does not absorb water quite as quickly. I use a slightly different method when cooking it. You can check this method out here: How to Cook Red Quinoa

Quinoa Granola

February 4, 2012
Thumbnail image for Quinoa Granola

There was a lot of cereal around my house when I was a kid. I have fond memories of waking up to a bowl of Special K covered in sugar and bananas. But when I was allowed to pick the cereal, my choice was always the same – granola! Now I know that probably puts [...]

Thai Black Rice & Quinoa Salad

February 1, 2012
Thumbnail image for Thai Black Rice & Quinoa Salad

Lately I’ve been feeling that the quinoa salad recipes I make for the family on a regular basis have gotten a little…redundant. Not that they aren’t super yummy, but when you eat quinoa as much as we do after a while it can get a little boring. So, I decided to liven things up a [...]

Crispy Southwestern Quinoa and Chick’n Burritos

January 29, 2012

It’s not often that I tell you that you really have to try a recipe…but you really have to try this one.   It reminds me a bit of something you would get at a restaurant and later find out that it has 800 calories and 30 grams of fat.  In fact, it was so yummy [...]

Super Clean Quinoa Patties

January 27, 2012

I have a confession. I haven’t been doing very well in the first month of the year with my plans to get fit and really work the kinks out of my diet.  You’d think running a website like this would keep me on track at all times, wouldn’t you? Not so much. So forgive me [...]

Quinoa Edamame Salad

I don’t know about you but when I’m feeling like there is more to do in a given day than I can possibly get done, I find myself reaching for foods that are….less than ideal.   I could blame the fact that my boys had a fleeing infatuation with bagel chips (and the hubby bought [...]

Quinoa Burger

January 24, 2012

Today’s Quinoa Burger is a protein packed meal that will please herbivores and carnivores alike.  It happens to be my husbands new favorite veggie burger recipe, and I often make a double batch just for him.  With over 30 grams of protein per serving, its an ideal hungry man’s dinner, veggie style! Now, my apologies [...]

Quinoa Bread Recipe | Quinoa Sandwich Buns

There are few things I enjoy more than really good bread. But lately, I’ve been increasingly aware of all the junk that is in the bread we buy. If you have never taken the time to do so, you really owe it to yourself to read the labels on bread – and not just major [...]

Quinoa Taco Bowl

Anyone who knows me knows that I crave creamy comfort food. In fact, there was a point in my life that if you had asked me my favorite food it would have been a toss up between macaroni and cheese and sour cream. (And the sour cream part would have been only half joking.) I [...]

Chocolate Peanut Butter Quinoa and Oats

January 16, 2012

Lately, I’ve had a few requests for easy quinoa breakfast recipes.  There is no doubt that quinoa is a great way to start your day, but I must confess that I’m not much for a traditional breakfast. In fact, I’m much more likely to have a salad with balsamic vinegar for breakfast than I am [...]

Cinnamon Quinoa Bites

Anyone who knows me knows I stress a bit about what my boys eat.  I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my adult life thanks to unhealthy eating habits I learned as a child.  I KNOW so much about how to eat, I like to cook, I really don’t have a huge appetite, yet [...]

Spicy Sun Dried Tomato and Broccoli Quinoa Pasta

January 9, 2012
Thumbnail image for Spicy Sun Dried Tomato and Broccoli Quinoa Pasta

One of my goals for this year is to really master my eating. I think Gena over at Choosing Raw said it best when she talked about discovering our “eating identity”.  What I want to do is to figure out how I am happiest eating in a manner that has nothing to do with dieting [...]

Quinoa Protein Bars

January 5, 2012

Given the fact that it is the first of the year, I’m guessing that I’m not the only one who is placing an increased focus on health, nutrition and exercise. Although I always say that “this is the year” that I’m finally going to regain my pre-baby body, I really DO believe that this is [...]

Today I’ve got an easy to make and super healthy recipe for you that is perfect for your New Years resolution. The recipe began with a reader asking me if it was possible to convert it to a gluten free recipe, which I was happy to do. Unfortunately, this request came several weeks ago and [...]

Thumbnail image for Mango Quinoa Parfaits

As soon as Christmas is over, the first thing my mind goes to are plans for the New Year. Although I am the first to admit that I haven’t really ironed out what my goals are for next year, one thing I am clear on is that I need to refocus myself on eating healthy, [...]

Butternut Squash Quinoa

December 26, 2011

I don’t know about you but today I’m feeling a bit like I should be wearing a t-shirt that says “I survived Christmas 2011″. Its not so much that I over did it, because I really didn’t. In fact, more so that any year prior I feel like I finally achieved the perfect balance between [...]
