A couple of tips to help get you started with my Quinoa Recipes:

  • Quinoa can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. I typically cook three cups of quinoa at the beginning of the week and store it for recipes later. (Three cups of dry quinoa will make nine cups of cooked quinoa.) Be careful when you are looking at the recipes to determine if it calls for cooked quinoa or just quinoa.
  • If you need to know a basic recipe for getting started with cooking quinoa, I recommend this post: How to Cook Quinoa Perfectly
  • Unless you have purchased packaged quinoa that specifically states that it has been pre-rinsed you need to rinse quinoa thoroughly prior to cooking. The exterior of the seeds are covered in a bitter substance called saponin. Not only will it ruin the taste of the dish but it can cause gastrointestinal distress in some people. Its so soapy that the Incas used to rinse quinoa and save the water to bathe in! Rinsing quinoa is easy, but you will need a very fine metal strainer like this one or the seeds will fall through. Simply put the quinoa in the strainer and run it under a warm stream of water for three or four minutes.
  • Some people like to soak quinoa prior to rinsing. If you decide to soak your quinoa, just be aware that it will decrease the cooking time. If you soak it for long the quinoa will be a bit softer – try it for yourself and see if you like it!
  • A lot of people ask if you can cook quinoa in a rice cooker. Yes! Here is where I posted on how: How to Cook Quinoa in a Rice Cooker
  • While red quinoa and white quinoa can be used interchangeably, red quinoa does not absorb water quite as quickly. I use a slightly different method when cooking it. You can check this method out here: How to Cook Red Quinoa

Kid Friendly Quinoa Fritters

December 7, 2011
Thumbnail image for Kid Friendly Quinoa Fritters

If you have been reading long at all, you know that I love my foods spicy and with lots of kick. My boys  on the other hand aren’t nearly so enthusiastic. My salads are not-so-affectionately referred to as “stinky salads” and the boys run the other way whenever I’m eating one.  I sometimes wonder if  [...]
