Can You Cook Quinoa in a Microwave Rice Cooker?

by on July 23, 2010

People ask me all the time if it is ok to cook quinoa in a rice cooker. My answer, absolutely yes! In fact, I think this is one of the best ways of cooking quinoa. It creates the perfect texture, very much like the way you cook quinoa for quinoa salad. Believe it or not, you can even make quinoa in a microwave rice cooker! This means that no matter how bad of a cook you are you can cook quinoa.

Of course, a microwave rice cooker is also great for, um, cooking rice. (Which I do from time to time.)

The primary advantage of a microwave rice cooker is that you can cook rice (or quinoa) with very little chance of scorching. It is also a great way to steam vegetables in the microwave, which I have heard, is one of the healthiest ways to cook vegetables. One thing to keep in mind is the size of your microwave rice cooker. Most are not very large capacity, so make sure that you do not overload it.

When I cook quinoa on the stovetop, I like to add flavorings up front. I have found that with a microwave rice cooker I am much better at saving my add in’s for later.

Thanks for that info, very interesting. I get bored of plain rice but I'm not very skilled in the kitchen. There's a lot of unique ideas at this rice recipes homepage I found that you might be interested in too.
